For those who haven't noticed, I've been more than scarce around here for a while. Unreliable net access, just to start with...and I'm about to be completely absent for two weeks. If it's important, mail me (and I apologize to the people to whom I owe correspondence).

First, though--we have a show this weekend.Collapse )

The computer will be packed up shortly. Access will be sporadic at best for a few days, probably. Call if you really need to get me.

I have come to the conclusion that moving is depressing. I keep packing boxes, with little discernible effect. On the other hand, I'm extremely impressed by my ability to compress and organize things into tiny spaces and/or my ability to warp the space/time continuum in interesting ways that allow this apartment to be functionally several times larger than the floorplan says it ought to be. It's probably a good thing we're moving before the management tries to come up with a way to charge for that.

When I think about prejudice and ableism, a few moments always come back to me.Collapse )

Sometimes I despair. Sometimes, I burn out. Sometimes, I'm so frustrated I could scream. Ableism is insidiously invisible, dismissed as oversensitivity, accepted as the status quo; even my best friends don't always realize when they engage in it, and some of the most prejudiced people I know are ABs who work in disability-related fields. But I look back on these moments, and I remember. I remember that the world is not safe, so long as prejudice and disconnection exist. I remember that I could have died, every year of my life, because of one person's prejudice. I remember that I'm here because of equal parts of strength, luck, and love. I remember how fortunate I am. And I remember that not everyone may be so fortunate, and I grieve, and I return to the battle.

I need help, guys.

No, not with moving out--I've got that under control, save for maybe tapping the usual suspects for an hour's help with the two-person items.

The place that I'm moving to has been uninhabited and used for storage for thirteen years. It's full of stuff that needs to go elsewhere. I need people who can lift and carry (some heavy things, most of it lighter but needs to go upstairs), people who can tote things short distances repeatedly, and even people who can stay still and help clean and organize. Once the room's empty, I'll be stripping it down and proving that I know how to build the inside of a house as well as the outside.

Payment in the form of dinner, seashells, and eternal gratitude. Laundry, wheel lessons, and future cooking by special arrangement. Who knows, we might even have fun--

What: Moving stuff!
Where: Tucker. Call or mail for details
Who: Pretty please?
When: Sat, May 3rd, noon-6
Bring: Work clothes

I'm posting this here so no one gets their feelings hurt over not being told first.

We're moving. Decision final, notice given. The list of grievances is multiple, but the more-or-less constant harassment and attempted strongarm tactics (like accosting me on the 10th of the month to say that our rent was actually 1139 for the current month--otherwise known as 450 over the rate that doesn't change until we get thirty days notice in writing) make me strongly resistant to giving these people any more money.

I'm going to have a great deal of fun pointing and laughing when the building's standing empty while they're trying to claim that 1100 is market rate for an elderly 400 sf studio. This ain't NYC.

Where are we moving? Who knows. If nothing presents itself, probably the 1000 sf apartment in the basement at Tucker. That has the marked advantage of letting us save up a bit extra to buy somewhere. It won't be nearly as convenient a location, but at least I'll finally have enough concentrated time there to get the greywater system installed and make significant progress on the kiva and guesthouse projects.
